Do Refrigerant Line Sets Come Precharged?

Reviewed by AC Direct Technical Team Updated June 6, 20263 min read
The short answerRefrigerant line sets are sealed at each end to keep out moisture, but they are not precharged with refrigerant. The seal holds a small nitrogen charge for protection, not refrigerant. During installation, the system is evacuated and the correct refrigerant is added to fill the full volume of the piping.

What Sealed Line Sets Actually Contain

Most line sets sold today are sealed at both ends before they leave the factory. The purpose of that seal is to keep moisture and debris out of the copper tubing during shipping and storage. Moisture inside a line set can cause problems once the system is running, so a clean, dry interior matters. The seal does not mean the line set arrives full of refrigerant ready to run.

Precharged Means Nitrogen, Not Refrigerant

When people ask whether a line set is precharged, the term usually refers to a small nitrogen charge, not a refrigerant charge. Nitrogen is inert and helps protect the inside of the tubing. It is not the refrigerant your system needs to cool or heat. Either way, refrigerant still has to be added to fill the total volume of the piping once the line set is connected. In current practice, nitrogen charges are no longer commonly used in line sets, so most arrive simply sealed and dry.

How Refrigerant Is Added During Installation

The refrigerant in your system lives in the condenser or heat pump, which is shipped with a factory charge sized for a standard line set length. When the line set is installed, the lines are connected, the system is pressure tested, and then evacuated with a vacuum pump to remove air and moisture. Only after that is the refrigerant released into the lines, or topped off if the run is longer than the standard length. This step is done by a licensed technician using the correct refrigerant type for your equipment.

Common questions

Does a sealed line set have refrigerant inside?
No. A sealed line set is capped to keep out moisture and debris. Any charge inside is typically nitrogen for protection, not refrigerant. The refrigerant is added when the system is installed.
Why is nitrogen used instead of refrigerant?
Nitrogen is inert and inexpensive, so it protects the inside of the tubing without wasting refrigerant. It also helps confirm the line set is sealed. Refrigerant is reserved for the final system charge.
Do I need to add refrigerant when I install a line set?
Yes. Refrigerant must fill the full volume of the piping. A technician evacuates the lines, then releases the system charge and tops it off if the run is longer than the standard length.
