Replacing just the outdoor unit
If you have a gas furnace paired with a central air conditioner, the outdoor unit can normally be replaced without changing the indoor section. You will need the capacity, or tonnage, of your existing outdoor unit to choose the correct replacement. Match the new unit to that tonnage so it works with your current ductwork and indoor coil.
Manufacturers recommend a matched indoor coil for proper efficiency. In practice, many people replace only the outdoor unit and do not run into problems. The system may not reach its full rated capacity and efficiency, but if that is what your budget allows, it remains a workable option.
Heat pumps are different
If you have a heat pump split system, replacing only the outdoor unit can create a refrigerant imbalance in heating mode. No one can promise in advance that a particular replacement will work unless it is an identical model. The odds are in your favor, but be ready to replace the indoor unit too if a problem shows up.
When to replace the whole system
As a general rule, if your system is more than 10 years old and you have a major failure, a new high efficiency matched system can be the better value over time. Newer equipment uses less energy, and a matched set carries the manufacturer parts warranty on components designed to work together. That warranty covers parts only, never labor, and is handled through a local licensed contractor or authorized distributor. A licensed contractor installs and services the equipment; AC Direct sells and ships it.
| Your system | Replacing one unit |
|---|---|
| Gas furnace plus AC | Usually works if tonnage matches |
| Heat pump split system | Risk of refrigerant imbalance |
| System over 10 years old | Full matched system often better |
What to have ready
Before you order, find the tonnage on your existing outdoor unit nameplate and note whether your system is a heat pump or a straight air conditioner. With those details you can pick a correct replacement and decide whether a single unit or a matched set fits your needs.
