Can I Replace Just the Outdoor or Indoor Unit?

Reviewed by AC Direct Technical Team Updated June 6, 20263 min read
The short answerOften yes. With a gas furnace and central air conditioner, you can usually replace the outdoor unit alone if you match the existing tonnage. Matching the indoor coil gives full rated efficiency. With a heat pump, replacing only one unit can cause a refrigerant imbalance, so be prepared to replace both.

How to decide between a single unit and a matched system.

Replacing just the outdoor unit

If you have a gas furnace paired with a central air conditioner, the outdoor unit can normally be replaced without changing the indoor section. You will need the capacity, or tonnage, of your existing outdoor unit to choose the correct replacement. Match the new unit to that tonnage so it works with your current ductwork and indoor coil.

Manufacturers recommend a matched indoor coil for proper efficiency. In practice, many people replace only the outdoor unit and do not run into problems. The system may not reach its full rated capacity and efficiency, but if that is what your budget allows, it remains a workable option.

Heat pumps are different

If you have a heat pump split system, replacing only the outdoor unit can create a refrigerant imbalance in heating mode. No one can promise in advance that a particular replacement will work unless it is an identical model. The odds are in your favor, but be ready to replace the indoor unit too if a problem shows up.

When to replace the whole system

As a general rule, if your system is more than 10 years old and you have a major failure, a new high efficiency matched system can be the better value over time. Newer equipment uses less energy, and a matched set carries the manufacturer parts warranty on components designed to work together. That warranty covers parts only, never labor, and is handled through a local licensed contractor or authorized distributor. A licensed contractor installs and services the equipment; AC Direct sells and ships it.

What to have ready

Before you order, find the tonnage on your existing outdoor unit nameplate and note whether your system is a heat pump or a straight air conditioner. With those details you can pick a correct replacement and decide whether a single unit or a matched set fits your needs.

Common questions

Do I have to match the indoor coil?
Manufacturers recommend a matched coil for full efficiency. You can replace only the outdoor unit, but the system may not reach its rated capacity or efficiency.
Where do I find my unit tonnage?
Check the nameplate on your existing outdoor unit. The model and serial number indicate the capacity, which you need to choose the correct replacement.
Is replacing one unit risky on a heat pump?
Yes. On a heat pump, mixing units can cause a refrigerant imbalance in heating mode. Be prepared to replace the indoor unit if a problem appears.
