What Liftgate Service Does
Furnaces, condensers, and air handlers ship by freight on a large truck. A liftgate is a powered platform on the back of that truck that lowers heavy equipment from the trailer bed down to ground level. Without a liftgate, the driver has no safe way to get a heavy unit off the truck unless your location has a forklift or a loading dock at trailer height.
When You Should Add It
Add liftgate service whenever a suitable means to lower the equipment from the back of the truck to the ground does not exist at your delivery address. Suitable means include a forklift or two to three people with strong backs ready to lift the unit down by hand. If you do not have those, the liftgate is the way your order reaches the ground safely.
This service is recommended for large, heavy units and can be added during checkout. Most residential deliveries do not have a dock or forklift, so liftgate is a common choice for homeowners.
Do You Still Need It With a Dock?
| At your delivery site | Liftgate needed? |
|---|---|
| Forklift available | No |
| Loading dock at truck height | No |
| Two to three strong helpers | Usually no |
| None of the above | Yes, add liftgate |
After the Unit Reaches the Ground
The liftgate only gets your order to the ground next to the truck. It does not move the unit into your garage, basement, or storage area. Plan to have a handtruck or dolly on hand, plus a clear path, so you can roll the equipment to where it needs to go after the driver leaves.
