Can I Install My New HVAC System Myself?

Reviewed by AC Direct Technical Team Updated June 6, 20263 min read
The short answerYes, many handy homeowners install their own systems, though local codes may require a licensed contractor for electrical, gas, or refrigerant work. AC Direct sells the equipment online and ships it direct to you. We do not perform installs or service, so a local licensed contractor handles the labor. Manufacturer installation manuals ship with the equipment.

Common installation questions before you buy your HVAC system.

Can you install it for me?

AC Direct is an online retailer of heating and cooling equipment. We sell systems and ship them direct to your home or office, but we do not provide installation or in-home service. If you would rather not install the unit yourself, you can hire a local HVAC contractor of your choice to handle the work. Many customers buy their equipment from us at a lower price, then pay a local pro for labor only.

Does my installer need manufacturer certification?

For most residential equipment, your installer does not need to be certified by the specific manufacturer. A licensed, qualified HVAC technician can install the system. Any technician who handles refrigerant must hold EPA certification, which is a federal requirement. Always confirm that your installer carries the proper state and local licensing for electrical and gas work.

Do the refrigerant line sets come precharged?

Line sets are not shipped precharged. The outdoor condenser or heat pump ships with a factory charge sized for a standard line length. Your installer connects the line set, pulls a vacuum, then adds or adjusts refrigerant to match your run. This is one reason the refrigerant connections should be made by an EPA certified technician.

Can I get the instructions before delivery?

Yes. Installation manuals are available so you and your installer can review the requirements before your order arrives. This helps you plan the electrical, ductwork, and clearances ahead of time. Your licensed contractor can use these manuals to plan the job and confirm the unit fits your application before installation.

Common questions

Does AC Direct provide installers?
No. AC Direct sells and ships the equipment only. You can hire any qualified local HVAC contractor to handle the installation.
Do I need an EPA certified technician?
Anyone handling refrigerant must be EPA certified by federal law. A homeowner can do much of the setup, but refrigerant work should be left to a certified tech.
Where do I find the installation manual?
Manufacturer installation manuals ship with the equipment. Your licensed contractor uses them to plan the electrical, gas, and refrigerant work.
Are line sets shipped precharged?
No. The outdoor unit ships with a factory charge. Your installer connects the line set, pulls a vacuum, and adjusts refrigerant for your run length.
