R-454B vs R-32: Which Refrigerant Is in My New System and Does It Matter?
Reviewed by AC Direct Technical TeamUpdated June 1, 20266 min read
The short answerR-454B is common in ducted central air conditioners and heat pumps. R-32 is common in ductless mini splits and some ducted systems. Both are low-GWP A2L refrigerants that replaced R-410A in new equipment. For a homeowner the practical difference is small, so choose the system that fits your home, not the refrigerant label.

Two A2L refrigerants, two typical applications. Both are the new normal.

Why both exist
Manufacturers chose between the two as they redesigned equipment for the AIM Act. R-454B was adopted widely for ducted residential systems. R-32 has been used for years in ductless systems worldwide and carried over into the new standard. Both have a much lower GWP than R-410A and both are A2L.
Does it change anything for you
Servicing
Either way, your installer services the system with the refrigerant it was built for. You do not mix them, and you do not retrofit one for the other.
Efficiency and comfort
The refrigerant is not what makes a system efficient. SEER2, HSPF2, and the equipment design drive comfort and running cost. A well-matched system performs well on either refrigerant.

Neither is better for a homeowner. They suit different applications, with R-454B common in ducted systems and R-32 common in ductless. Both are low-GWP A2L refrigerants.
Which refrigerant does my brand use?
It depends on the model. Many ducted brands use R-454B, while several ductless and some ducted lines use R-32. The system spec sheet lists the refrigerant.
Can I mix R-454B and R-32?
No. Each system uses the one it was designed for. They are not interchangeable and must not be mixed.
Do they cool differently?
Not in a way you would notice. Comfort and efficiency come from the system design and its SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings, not the refrigerant choice.
