The rule of thumb that actually helps
A common trade rule multiplies the system's age in years by the repair cost. If that number is high, replacement usually makes more sense than pouring money into an old unit. Age matters because an older system is closer to the end of its life and less efficient than what is available now.
Signs replacement wins
Age over 12 to 15 years
Most central AC systems last around 12 to 17 years. Past that window, repairs tend to stack up and efficiency lags behind current equipment.
A large or repeat repair
A failed compressor or a major leak on an old unit is the classic replace signal. So is the second or third repair in a couple of seasons.
It still uses R-410A and needs refrigerant
An aging R-410A unit that needs a recharge is a natural point to move to a new A2L system rather than invest more in old equipment.
Signs a repair is fine
If the system is under about 10 years old, the repair is small, and it has been reliable, fixing it is often the better value. Get the repair quoted, then plan your eventual replacement so it is a choice, not an emergency.
