How often should you change your furnace filter?
Check the filter monthly and change it when it looks dirty. Standard one-inch filters typically last 30 to 90 days. Four-inch media filters usually run four to six months. Households with shedding pets, allergies, wildfire smoke exposure, or active construction dust will run through filters faster. The calendar is a guideline. The filter itself is the answer.
Filter thickness matters because surface area matters. A one-inch pleated filter has less media to load, so it clogs faster and puts a static-pressure penalty on the blower sooner. Match the filter rating to the household
A higher MERV rating captures more, but it also restricts more. The EPA notes that furnace filters are rated by their ability to capture particles of specific sizes, and the right choice depends on both the health situation in the house and what your blower and duct system can pull through. If a technician has flagged high static pressure on your system, do not jump three MERV levels at once. Step up gradually, or add filter area.
What are the warning signs your furnace is failing?
The most reliable warning signs are short cycling, a yellow or flickering burner flame, rising heating bills without a rate change, uneven heat and cold spots, and new noises. Any one of them is worth a service call. Two or three together is the moment to have the repair-versus-replace conversation before the furnace forces it in January.
Short cycling
Short cycling means the furnace fires up, runs for a minute or two, shuts down, then restarts. It is almost always a symptom of something upstream: a clogged filter tripping the high-limit switch, an oversized furnace hitting the setpoint too fast, a failing flame sensor, or a thermostat problem. It stresses the igniter and blower, and it wastes gas.
Flame color
A healthy gas burner flame is blue and steady. Yellow, orange, or a flame that flickers and rolls suggests incomplete combustion, which produces more carbon monoxide than it should. If you see this, shut the system off at the thermostat, verify your CO alarms are working, and call a technician. Do not diagnose combustion from a video.
Rising bills
If your gas usage has climbed noticeably without a rate change or a colder winter, the furnace is either losing efficiency or working harder to hit the setpoint because of a duct, filter, or airflow problem. Both are diagnosable.
Cold spots and uneven heat
A room that never gets warm can be a furnace problem, a duct problem, or a load problem where the system is too small for the addition someone put on ten years ago. A screech or whine typically points to a blower motor or inducer bearing. A grinding sound is a bearing on its way out. None of these get better on their own.
Is a tune-up worth it, or should you replace the furnace?
A tune-up is worth it for any furnace that is inside its expected service life and not showing multiple failure signs. Replacement enters the conversation when the furnace is past roughly fifteen years, when a single repair approaches half the cost of a new system, or when the heat exchanger is compromised. Age, repair history, and safety, in that order.

The rough decision framework
- Under 10 years old, one repair needed: Repair. The system has years of life left, and a modern furnace already handled most of the wear items.
- 10 to 15 years, occasional repairs: Repair, but tune it up on schedule and start pricing what a replacement would look like so you are not shopping under pressure.
- 15 to 20 years, or a major component failure: This is the honest inflection point. A cracked heat exchanger, a failed inducer, or a control board on a system this old is often the tipping point.
- Over 20 years: Even if it still runs, efficiency is well below what a modern unit delivers, and the parts supply for older platforms gets thin.
Meet Kevin. Kevin's furnace is seventeen, the igniter went out in November, the inducer needed replacement in January, and the technician found a hairline in the heat exchanger in March. What makes a high efficiency furnace different?
A high efficiency furnace, meaning 90 percent AFUE or higher, uses a second heat exchanger to pull additional heat from the exhaust that a standard 80 percent unit vents outside. That condensing process produces liquid water instead of hot flue gas, which changes both the venting material and where the furnace can be installed. Fewer BTUs go up the flue. More stay in the house.
AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, is the percentage of fuel energy that becomes usable heat over a season. An 80 percent unit turns 80 cents of every fuel dollar into heat and sends the rest up the flue. A 96 percent condensing unit keeps almost all of it. Condensing versus non-condensing, and why venting matters
A standard 80 percent furnace vents through metal pipe because its exhaust is hot. A condensing furnace vents through PVC because it has already pulled most of the heat out of the exhaust, leaving cool, moist flue gas and a small condensate drain to manage. That has three practical consequences for a replacement:
- The venting usually has to be re-run in PVC to the outside, often through a sidewall rather than the existing chimney.
- You need a condensate drain, which means a nearby drain location or a small condensate pump.
- Combustion air is typically brought in through a second PVC pipe (sealed combustion), which is quieter and does not pull heated house air into the flame.

Efficiency is not only about AFUE. A single-stage burner is either on or off. A two-stage burner has a lower first stage that handles milder days and only ramps to full fire when it needs to. A modulating burner adjusts fire rate in fine increments and pairs with a variable-speed blower for the most consistent room temperatures. On paper it is a comfort story. In practice it is also an operating-cost story, because the furnace spends most of the season running at partial load instead of cycling on and off.

Why does my furnace smell like it is burning dust the first time it runs in fall?
Dust settles on the heat exchanger and burners over the off-season. The first few cycles of the heating season burn that dust off, which produces a mild burnt smell for 15 to 30 minutes. It is normal. A persistent burning smell, smoke, or a chemical odor is not, and warrants shutting the system off and calling a technician.
Is a bigger furnace a better furnace?
No. An oversized furnace short cycles, heats unevenly, wastes fuel, and shortens component life. Correct sizing comes from a Manual J load calculation, not the tonnage of the old unit.
