Does your outdoor unit run in the winter?
Yes-in-winter is the single clearest tell. Walk outside on a cold day with the thermostat set to heat. If the fan on the outdoor unit is spinning and you hear the compressor humming, you have a heat pump. If the outdoor unit sits silent while the house is warming up, your heat is coming from a furnace indoors.
Put your hand near the top of the unit, well away from the fan blades. On a heat pump in heating mode you will feel cool air being pushed out, because the outdoor coil is doing the opposite of what it does in summer. It is pulling heat out of the outside air and sending what is left back into the yard.
A conventional central air conditioner has no reason to run in January. Its only job is cooling. So when a neighbor peeks over the fence and says "your AC is on in the snow," and the system is heating the house comfortably, that neighbor has just diagnosed your heat pump for you.
Does your thermostat have emergency or auxiliary heat?
Only heat pump systems use "Emergency Heat" (often shown as EM Heat) or "Auxiliary Heat" (AUX). Look at your thermostat. If you see either label as a mode, a button, or a small indicator that lights up during cold snaps, you have a heat pump. A straight AC and furnace pairing does not use these terms.
Here is the difference between the two, because the labels get misused all the time. Auxiliary heat is automatic. When the outdoor temperature drops or you raise the setpoint several degrees at once, the thermostat brings in supplemental electric resistance strips inside the air handler to help the heat pump catch up. Emergency heat is manual, and it bypasses the heat pump entirely, running only on those resistance strips.

What does the model number on the outdoor unit tell you?
The data plate on the side of the outdoor unit is the definitive source. A heat pump will either say so in plain language, include "HP" or "H" in the model number, or list both a SEER2 rating (cooling) and an HSPF2 rating (heating). If only a SEER2 rating appears, you have an air conditioner. Both ratings together means heat pump.
Find the metal or foil plate on the side or back of the outdoor cabinet. A flashlight helps; so does wiping off a decade of pollen. The model number is a coded string, and manufacturers each do it their own way, but a few patterns hold up across brands.
What to look for on the plate
- Model number prefix. Letters like HP, H, or the word "Heat Pump" spelled out. Some brands are helpful; others make you work for it.
- Two efficiency ratings. Per ENERGY STAR, heat pumps are rated for both cooling (SEER2) and heating (HSPF2). An AC-only condenser has no heating rating to publish.
- Capacity code. A cluster like "036" or "042" usually encodes BTU per hour. 036 is a 3-ton system, 042 is 3.5 tons, and so on. This matters when you shop a replacement.

Is there a reversing valve visible?
A reversing valve is the component that lets a heat pump switch between heating and cooling. It exists only in heat pumps. If you can see one inside the outdoor cabinet, you have a heat pump. If you cannot see one, do not open the cabinet to find out. Use the other checks instead.
The valve is a brass cylinder with four copper refrigerant lines meeting at it, usually mounted near the compressor. It looks a bit like a pipe fitting had opinions and decided to become a small submarine. If your outdoor unit has a louvered grill on top and the valve is visible without disassembly, you can spot it from outside.
Do you have a furnace or an air handler indoors?
Walk to the indoor unit, usually in a basement, attic, or utility closet. If you see a gas line running to it and a metal flue pipe leading up and out, it is a furnace, and the outdoor unit is probably an air conditioner. If the indoor unit has electrical connections but no gas line and no flue, it is an air handler, and you almost certainly have a heat pump.
A furnace burns fuel to make heat. It needs a gas or oil supply going in and an exhaust flue going out. An air handler does not burn anything. It contains a blower, a filter slot, and an indoor coil where refrigerant from the outdoor unit exchanges heat with the air moving through your ducts. It may also contain a bank of electric resistance strips for auxiliary heat, but there will be no combustion hardware anywhere.
The dual fuel exception
Here is where it gets interesting. A dual fuel system pairs a heat pump outdoors with a gas furnace indoors. So you can find a gas line, a flue, AND a heat pump on the same house. If the outdoor unit runs on mild-cold days for heat but the furnace takes over when it gets truly cold, that is a dual fuel setup working exactly as designed.
What refrigerant is your system using?
The data plate lists the refrigerant type. R-22 means the system was installed before roughly 2010 and is nearing or past its useful life. R-32 or R-454B means you have modern equipment installed within the last few years. The refrigerant tells you how old the system is, which tells you how urgent replacement planning should be.
The EPA's SNAP program has moved the industry through several refrigerant transitions, and the current generation focuses on lower global warming potential. R-32 is a single-component refrigerant favored by many ductless and central system makers. R-454B is a blend used widely in newer residential central systems. They are not interchangeable; equipment is engineered around one or the other.
