Get your 5th Gen MRCOOL DIY paired with the SmartHVAC app, Alexa, and Google Home - and fix the connection problems that trip up most homeowners.
You just finished installing your MRCOOL DIY mini-split. The line set is connected, the unit is humming, and cold air is pouring out of the head. Time for the fun part: pulling out your phone, opening the SmartHVAC app, and setting up smart control. Then the app asks you to log in again. And again. Or pairing fails halfway through with a vague error. You are not alone - this is the single most common stumbling block on an otherwise smooth DIY install.
The good news: nearly every MRCOOL WiFi issue traces back to a small handful of fixable causes. This guide walks through initial pairing, Alexa and Google Home setup, and the troubleshooting steps that actually work. For broader system issues beyond WiFi, see our parent guide on MRCOOL DIY troubleshooting: fix common problems yourself.
Most 5th Gen MRCOOL DIY air handlers (2025-2026 models) ship with the WMK-19 Smart Controller already inside the indoor unit. Older 3rd and 4th Gen units used a separate USB Smart Kit and required a QR code scan during pairing. The newer WMK-19 skips that step entirely.
Here's the basic sequence for a 5th Gen unit:
Available on iOS and Android. Make sure you grab the latest version - the app is updated regularly and outdated versions are a frequent source of pairing bugs.
MRCOOL systems do not connect to 5 GHz WiFi. If your router is dual-band, your phone must be on the 2.4 GHz band during pairing. On many newer routers both bands share one network name, which can cause silent failures.
On the remote, press and hold LED + TEMP ▲ for about 5 seconds. The WiFi icon on the indoor unit's display should start flashing rapidly. On some models, pressing the "LED" or "Wi-Fi" button 7 times within 3 minutes will display "AP" on the unit instead.
Register or log in, tap "Add Device," and follow the in-app instructions. The app will ask for your WiFi password and bind the unit to your account. The whole process should take 2 to 3 minutes once you're in pairing mode.
The SmartHVAC app is powered on the back end by Cielo WiGle, which is why some support requests get routed to Cielo rather than MRCOOL. Once paired, the WMK-19 controller is your bridge between the mini-split and the cloud, giving you these features:
- Mode, fan speed, and setpoint control from anywhere with internet
- Daily and weekly schedules
- Sleep mode programming
- Energy usage tracking and trends
- Multi-zone management if you have a multi-head system
If you are still shopping or planning a multi-zone setup, you can see all MRCOOL DIY systems by zone to match capacity to square footage before you wire up smart control.
Once the unit is talking to the SmartHVAC app, voice control is straightforward:
Go to More → Skills & Games and search for "MRCOOL."
You will be prompted to log in with your SmartHVAC credentials - the same ones you used during pairing. This links your devices to Alexa.
Run "Alexa, discover devices" or use the "Discover" button in the app. If you have several heads, rename each one to something Alexa can hear clearly - "Bedroom AC" works better than "MRCOOL Unit 2."
Try commands like "Alexa, set the bedroom AC to 72 degrees" or "Alexa, turn off the garage AC."
Google Home setup follows the same general pattern:
- Open the Google Home app and tap the + icon
- Choose Set up device → Works with Google
- Search for "MRCOOL" and select it
- Sign in with your SmartHVAC credentials to link the account
- Assign each unit to a room in your Google Home structure
From there, "Hey Google, turn on the living room AC" or "Hey Google, set the office to 70" should both work.
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Pairing fails right after entering WiFi password | Phone connected to 5 GHz band | Force phone to 2.4 GHz, or temporarily disable 5 GHz on router |
| App finds device but pairing times out | Weak signal at indoor unit | Move router closer or add an extender within 20 ft |
| "error (3176): asyn reply does not exist" | Outdated app or stale pairing session | Update SmartHVAC app, restart phone, retry pairing |
| App keeps logging you out | Account session bug or app cache | Update app, force-stop, re-login; contact Cielo support if persistent |
| Schedules don't trigger | App lost connection to unit | Reconnect WiFi, verify unit shows online in app before scheduling |
| Humidity not displayed in app | Known display limitation | Update app; some unit firmware does not push humidity data |
If pairing keeps failing or you are moving the unit to a new network, a clean reset usually clears it up.
In SmartHVAC, open the device settings and select "Remove" or "Delete." This frees the unit from the old account binding.
Turn off power at the breaker for at least 2 minutes. This fully resets the WMK-19 controller. Restore power and wait for the unit to fully boot.
LED + TEMP ▲ for 5 seconds, or 7 quick presses of the LED/Wi-Fi button until "AP" appears. Confirm the WiFi icon is flashing rapidly on the display.
Add the device again from scratch. With a clean slate on both sides, pairing typically completes on the first try.
If you are diagnosing other behavior at the same time - like the unit refusing to start or showing a code on the display - check our guide to MRCOOL DIY error codes before assuming WiFi is the culprit. Knowing the hardware behind the app helps when you are troubleshooting. Here is a quick reference for current 5th Gen DIY systems:
All 5th Gen units are pre-charged with R-454B refrigerant in their Quick Connect line sets, which is the reason these can be installed without a vacuum pump or EPA Section 608 certification. They also carry a 7-year compressor and 5-year parts warranty. If you are comparing models or pricing, you can browse pre-charged DIY systems and check current capacities side by side.
The most common cause is being on a 5 GHz network. MRCOOL systems only pair on 2.4 GHz. Other frequent causes are weak signal at the indoor unit (move within 20 ft of router or add an extender) and an outdated SmartHVAC app. Update the app, force the phone to 2.4 GHz, and retry pairing.
Not on 5th Gen DIY units. Those ship with the WMK-19 Smart Controller already integrated, and pairing is done by activating pairing mode on the remote. The QR code workflow was used on older 3rd and 4th Gen units with the separate USB Smart Kit.
Press and hold LED + TEMP ▲ on the remote for about 5 seconds. The WiFi icon on the indoor unit's display should flash rapidly. On some models, pressing the LED or Wi-Fi button 7 times within 3 minutes will display "AP" instead. Either state means the unit is ready to pair.
This is a reported bug usually fixed by updating the app to the latest version, force-stopping it, and signing back in. If it persists, contact Cielo support at [email protected] - they manage the app's back end.
Yes. The included handheld remote controls all functions independently of the app. WiFi only adds remote access, scheduling, energy tracking, and voice control. The mini-split itself works fine without ever connecting to a network.
No. Both voice platforms link through the SmartHVAC account. You must complete app pairing first, then enable the MRCOOL skill in Alexa or link the service in Google Home using the same credentials.
