What kinds of replacement filters are out there?
Residential air purification uses four functional filter classes plus one consumable. Pleated media filters rated by MERV capture particles by size. True HEPA cartridges trap the finest particles, including smoke and viruses. Activated carbon layers adsorb odors and volatile organic compounds. Pleated media filters (MERV-rated)
Folded paper or synthetic media, held in a cardboard or plastic frame. The pleats multiply surface area, which increases dust holding capacity and reduces pressure drop compared to flat media. These are rated on the MERV scale, which for residential and light commercial work runs 1 through 16.
True HEPA filters
A dense mat of randomized fibers trapping particles through diffusion, interception, and impaction. To be labeled True HEPA in the US, a filter must capture at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, which is the most penetrating particle size. European H13 filters (99.95% at 0.1 microns) also meet the US labeling standard.
Activated carbon
Porous carbon granules that adsorb gas-phase pollutants: odors, cooking smells, VOCs, and certain chemicals. They do nothing for particulates, and their capacity is finite. Once the pores are full, odors return.
Electronic collector cells
Washable metal plates that charge passing particles and then collect them electrostatically. Common in whole-home electronic air cleaners branded ACiQ, Trion, and similar. They are cleaned or replaced roughly once per year and offer filtration comparable to MERV 8 through 16 depending on the unit.
UV-C bulbs

How do you find the right size and model?
Read the frame of the filter you are replacing. Every residential filter has its size printed on the cardboard or plastic edge in Length x Width x Thickness inches. That printed number is the nominal size (a rounded ordering number); the actual media is undercut by roughly half an inch so it can slide into the cabinet without binding. For 1-inch filters this is straightforward. For 4 and 5-inch cabinet filters, it is not.
Nominal versus actual dimensions
A nominal 16x25x1 filter typically measures around 15.5 x 24.5 x 0.75 inches. That undercut is intentional. The problem shows up with thicker whole-home filters. Three brands all labeled 16x25x5 can measure meaningfully different in the real world, because there is no enforced actual-dimension standard for cabinet filters. Match the media rack, not the nominal number alone.
Whole-home cabinet filters
Aprilaire, Trion, and similar whole-home cleaners use proprietary cabinet dimensions. The safer path is to match the filter to the cabinet model number (Aprilaire 213 fits an Aprilaire 2210 cabinet, for example) rather than trying to shoehorn in a generic 16x25x5.
Portable air purifiers
Portables use model-specific filters. There is no nominal-size shortcut. Find the purifier's model number on the label at the back of the unit and order the manufacturer's part number, or a certified compatible.
What does the MERV rating actually mean?
MERV is the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a standard developed under ASHRAE Standard 52.2. Filters are tested with particles from 0.3 to 10 microns, and the rating reflects the smallest particles the filter can consistently trap. On the residential scale, MERV 1 catches lint. MERV 16 catches viruses. Higher numbers filter smaller particles but also add resistance to airflow.

The static pressure trade-off
Higher MERV means denser media, which means more resistance to airflow. If your blower and duct system were sized for a MERV 8 pleated filter and you install a MERV 16, the system may not move enough air. Most residential HVAC works well between MERV 8 and MERV 13. Beyond that you are in territory where the duct design has to have been planned around the filter, not the other way around.
When is true HEPA the right choice?
True HEPA belongs in two places: portable air purifiers used in a specific room, and bypass HEPA cabinets tied into a whole-home duct system. It is the correct choice when you need to capture particles that MERV-rated media cannot reliably touch: wildfire smoke, fine viral aerosols, tobacco smoke, and the smallest allergen fragments. It is not typically installed inline in a residential main duct, because the resistance would collapse airflow.

Three cues override the calendar. The first is visible loading: if the media looks gray, it has been ready for a change for a while. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a higher MERV filter than my system was designed for?
Sometimes, cautiously. Going from MERV 8 to MERV 11 in the same 1-inch slot is usually fine. Jumping from MERV 8 to MERV 16 will likely restrict airflow and shorten blower life. A deeper 4 or 5-inch cabinet filter at MERV 13 is often a better upgrade than a dense 1-inch MERV 16.
Are washable filters worth it?
Rarely. Most washable panel filters are the MERV 1 to 4 equivalent of a basic fiberglass filter and offer limited particulate capture.
