Why isn't the highest MERV always best?
Because denser filter media makes your blower work harder. Residential HVAC blowers are engineered around a target static pressure, and most systems are designed to operate below roughly 0.5 inches of water column total external static pressure. A filter that pushes past that limit reduces airflow, which starves the evaporator coil in cooling and overheats the heat exchanger in heating.

The refrigerant itself does not change what MERV your system can handle. What matters is the type of blower motor inside. Older single-speed PSC motors cannot compensate, so they stall out on the same filter.
