How a Scroll Compressor Works
A scroll compressor uses two interleaved spiral pieces, one fixed and one orbiting, to draw in and compress refrigerant. As the orbiting scroll moves, it traps pockets of gas and squeezes them toward the center, where the compressed refrigerant exits. This continuous motion replaces the start and stop action of older reciprocating, or piston, compressors.
